“Impossible not to like it, we were enthralled.”
Our rooms…
We have 2 attractive Georgian rooms (Walpole and Cavel) that can be either twin or a super-king, and one cosy Tudor room (Nelson) that is also twin or a super-king. The Nelson suite is with a bath and shower hose. The Walpole and Cavel rooms have showers. Up to 2 extra mattresses for children can be placed in all 3 rooms. Max adult occupancy is 3 persons per room- plus one child. All our rooms have their own loos and two sets of sinks. All our double-beds have separately controlled electric blankets on both sides.
Breakfast…
Self-service continental breakfast in the drawing room is included and is usually bread / a choice of croissants, pain au chocolat or similar / jams / cereal / fruit / fruit juice and tea and coffee. Guests are welcome to use the small kitchenette to prepare simple meals and store food should you wish. We can also arrange for delicious meals to be ordered in advance with a local caterer if you are looking for something hot for lunch or dinner to be brought to the house. We are able to offer gf options for bread, cereal and milk. Breakfast can be taken at any time after midnight - if you get peckish for cereal at 1am you won’t be disturbing anyone. Our rooms have kettles and a small fridge for your morning milk for tea and coffee in your room. The dining table in the sitting-room is communal to all guests, like a continental “pensione” arrangement. You are welcome to eat in your room as well as downstairs. With notice the night before, we are able to arrange for a cooked breakfast at the local Pilgrim bureau during the season.
Cycling…
We have secure, overnight storage indoors for your cycles and tandems, and a locked outdoor yard for any dog trailers or similar. Guests who are cycling the Rebellion Way are very welcome - access to the yard is from the front door of the house. Please let us know in advance if you are bringing bikes. We are happy to wash lycra for you and leave it to air dry overnight or tumble as you prefer. Bike batteries can be plugged in directly from your bike.
Eating out locally…
If you’re arriving late afternoon, The Black Lion is the best option locally for a good dinner. We can book ahead for you if you prefer - it gets busy at times. Epiphany cafe is 3 doors away - a central hub to watch Walsingham life pass by their sunny windows and enjoy a delicious cake. For evening canteen style meals, we can arrange for you to eat at the Elmham House Pilgrim Bureau restaurant. 2 course meals are served there at 630pm. The Anglican Shrine restaurant is 250 yards away: they have some evening food also. Also, Read and Digest cafe are nearby, with an excellent selection of teas. Walsingham can get busy and it’s 4 miles plus each way to Wells or Fakenham.
For bigger budgets, we recommend the following: The Three Horseshoes, Wighton; The Carpenters Arms, Warham; The Globe, Wells-next-the-sea; or… fish n chips at Wells by the harbour - there’s often a big queue: it’s a 10 minute drive away. Wells has lots of good options. French’s seems to be the most popular fish n chip place, but Plattens next door on the harbour front is also often busy.
Dogs and don’ts…
We are doggy friendly but like to know in advance if you are bringing a pet: we make a small, per-night charge for dogs. We don’t have any TV’s in the house, but you are of course welcome to use the Wi-fi to keep up to speed. The Old Bakehouse is a family home and we live on the premises: we aim to make our guests feel very warmly welcomed and many of our online reviews comment as much. Our rooms are quiet and the beds are comfortable. Walsingham is a peaceful medieval village in the area known as the “Golden Triangle” of North Norfolk, where people do not have to worry about many of the concerns of urban life. There is no advertising or corporate coffee shop, but plenty of sandy beaches and abundant countryside nearby, plus wonderful wildlife of international importance, and definitely no motorways here in this AONB and conservation zone. We are 3 hours and a world away from the capital. We wouldn’t be anywhere else.
